I went grocery shopping today which always makes me think of money saving tips, so I was going to call this post Time (and Money) Saving Tuesday.
Then as I was doing dishes, writing this post in my head, I thought I would title it, In Case the Disposal Eats Organically.
Then I thought time and money saving tips were really boring and I'm not very good at saving money or time so I thought I would title it, The Man I Almost Fought With at Meijer.
Therefore, here are two money saving tips and a funny story....
Two of the items we needed were chicken broth and disposal cleaner. I am making delicious tomato soup this week and my disposal smells like garbage.
The low sodium chicken stock is expensive! Four dollars for 32 oz. I just couldn't bring myself to buy it (I need 3). So instead I bought a roaster chicken at the front of Meijer for $6. I shredded and froze the chicken and simmered broth all day on the oven. I made three gallons of chicken broth and my house smells delicious and I have some shredded chicken to use in the future. For $6!
Disposal cleaner is also expensive! It equaled to $1 per cleaning. So I bought the lemons that were on sale (and they happened to be organic) and chopped up a couple and ran it through the disposal (hence the question of whether my disposal eats organically). About $.25 a cleaning.
Also, I am horrible at coupons. I personally think they are a racket, and I just am not good at it. Period. All the coupons I ever find are for items I don't even buy. Produce (our main expense) is never on sale, I make most of my own cleaning solutions and I buy store brand for most other things. I usually end up spending more money with coupons because I am forced to buy brands I don't usually buy. So unless someone can convince me otherwise, I give up on coupons.
And now for my last title, The Man I Almost Fought With at Meijer..... to make a long story short(er), a man who was not in his right mind started verbally assulting me at Meijer. Calling me horrible names and shouting at me. Most of the names starting with the f-word. Know why I deserved being sworn at? Matt called to ask me to pick up some Coke and I said I would. Crazy Man thought it was rude of me to be on my cell phone. I was ignoring him and he didn't like that so he started following me swearing at me some more. I turned around and told him to never speak to me like that and I am calling the police. He raised his fists at me to hit me!
A few minutes later I heard him swearing at and fighting with someone else in aisle 10.
I'm not sure if security or the police were ever called or ever showed up. But I certainly got to thinking that sometimes grocery stores aren't that safe and you never know who is looney enough to target the innocent.
There you have it. And you thought my blog was getting all boring and only about my daughters.

Love it Abby! Thanks for the updates. Hannah's antics have me laughing out loud here...
This post made me laugh, although that's kind of scary about Meijer. You sounded like a pretty tough cookie, though. Were the girls with you??
Also, I am terrible at couponing. And making stuff myself. I just buy generic, too.
Yeah, I feel like coupons make me buy things. I think that's there point and thus the conspiracy begins. Good ideas on the thriftiness-and way to be a big girl.
that man did not know who he was messing with. thanks for the tips and i am totally with you about coupons!
I always throw lemons and ice in my disposal. It works great. Makes Jonathan a nervous wreck... so I just do it when he's not around :) Amen on the coupons. I'm joining a CSA this summer since produce is basically the bulk of my grocery budget as well. I'm excited to have local AND organic! You need a Trader Joe's... they have great organic chix broth for $1.99!
Ha ha! Hilarous!
we go back and forth about coupons too. it is just too hard to beat the deals at walmart generic too. i used to do price matching at walmart but in the end i spent an hour to save $5. it wasn't worth it.
i am impressed with the chicken broth!!
About the chicken broth....You can also buy chicken bouillon and make stock that way. I rarely buy the actual broth/stock. I usually just buy the bouillon and add the appropriate amount of water! I think the Organic brand is about 6 and it makes 38 cups of broth. Glad I wasn't at Meijer that day!
