Cognitive milestones

Hannah has always been very observant, since the day she was born. She never misses a thing, including the chocolate in my mouth I am trying to hide. Lest you think I am just bragging, she has also demonstrated some delays in gross motor skills and other skills such as drawing and cutting and she still doesn't know her letters yet. But really, she is so observant.

So it comes as no surprise (yet we were still very surprised), that Hannah looked at Matt and I this morning, looked at princess Tiana on her cup, pointed at Tiana and then herself and said, "I'm black."
We just looked at each other and then at Hannah. Matt said, "Yes, Hannah, you and princess Tiana both have beautiful skin."

(My first thought was "Who told you?!)

Then this afternoon, she was drawing some pictures on her magnadoodle (a pic of Olivia that is hilarious). I asked her to draw me and she said, "Well, how does your hair go?" I told her I didn't know, but see if she could draw it (I wasn't sure what she was asking).

She looked at me a second, and then muttered to herself, "Well, it's yellow....." and the proceeded to draw my face and hair (lol).

We don't talk about skin color around this house, which is why we were so surprised. But Hannah's a genius, it was bound to come out sooner rather than later:)

Have you seen the "multicultural crayon" boxes? Eight shades of skin tones in one box.

Way to go, Daddy! He knew just way to say. I'd be with Mommy... thinking the same thing, then freaking out a bit trying to think up the "right" response.

It's so fun to see them putting things together. Their little minds are working overtime right now...
